What is AI SEO?

AI SEO is the practice of making your website one of the 2 or 3 sources an AI engine names when someone asks a question in your category. The tools look familiar (schema markup, on-page structure, internal links) but the goal is different: you are optimizing for a mention inside an AI answer, not a click from a Google results page.

The short version

When a buyer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity a question, the AI does not hand back ten websites to choose from. It writes one paragraph and names 2 or 3 businesses inside that paragraph. The user reads the paragraph and usually stops scrolling. AI SEO is the work of being one of the names in that paragraph.

Old SEO asked "how do I show up on page one?". AI SEO asks "how do I show up inside the answer itself?". Different question, different tactics.

Why this is different from traditional SEO

Traditional SEO plays for ranking position. A page at position 4 still earns some clicks. A page at position 8 earns fewer but still gets some traffic.

AI search does not work that way. You are cited or you are not. There is no position 4 or position 8. The AI names 2 or 3 sources and moves on (searchengineland.com).

This shifts what matters on the page:

  • A direct answer in the first 2 to 3 sentences (the part the AI can extract and quote) matters more than the 2,000-word essay below it
  • Schema markup (FAQ, Article, HowTo) tells the AI what kind of content it is looking at
  • Freshness matters more than in classic SEO because AI answers are expected to be current
  • Backlink volume matters less than it used to, though established domain trust still helps (ahrefs.com)

Why business owners specifically need this

You run a $50K/month service business without a big content team. That is a structural advantage in AI search, not a disadvantage. You know the exact questions your buyers ask, in their language, because you hear them on sales calls every week. Larger competitors have content teams guessing at those questions from keyword tools.

A business owner who writes 20 tight answer pages from memory will outperform a corporate blog that writes 20 padded essays around the same keywords. The AI is looking for direct answers, not word count (backlinko.com).

The second advantage: you can run the whole operation yourself with AI tools, no content team, no $5K per month retainer. The playbook is not complicated. It is just not what most agencies are selling in 2026.

What AI SEO is not

It is not keyword stuffing. AI engines downweight pages that pad around a keyword without answering the question.

It is not link buying. Backlinks still help but the lift is smaller than in traditional SEO. A clean direct answer with FAQ schema often outperforms a page with more backlinks but worse structure.

It is not rewriting your whole existing site. Most AI SEO gains come from adding new question-targeted pages in a cluster, not from editing the homepage or service pages that are already indexed.

The minimum viable setup

For a non-technical business owner starting from zero:

  1. Pick one pillar topic: the thing you want to be the cited source for
  2. List 15 to 20 questions your buyers actually ask before hiring or buying
  3. Write one short page per question, answering it in the first 2 sentences
  4. Add FAQ schema to every page
  5. Link the pillar page to every spoke and the spokes to related spokes
  6. Track citations (not just clicks) with a tool like Otterly or Peec (otterly.ai)

One week to set up. One question-page per working day fills the cluster in a month.
