What is AEO?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the practice of structuring your site so AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews) quote you when buyers ask questions in your category. AEO is the newer name for what most business owners still call AI SEO, and the two terms are used interchangeably in 2026.

Where the term came from

The SEO world needed a new label once AI search engines started answering questions instead of linking to blue-link results. "Search engine optimization" describes optimizing for search engines (Google, Bing). "Answer engine optimization" describes optimizing for engines that answer questions directly (ChatGPT, Perplexity). Different output, different playbook, different name (searchengineland.com).

In practice, most people still say "AI SEO" in casual conversation and write "AEO" in documents. They mean the same thing.

What AEO actually optimizes for

Not rankings. Citations.

An AEO-optimized page is trying to be quoted inside an AI answer. When a buyer asks ChatGPT a question, ChatGPT writes 2 or 3 paragraphs, then lists the sources. Your goal is to be one of the sources it pulls from.

The signals that matter:

  • A direct answer to a specific question in the first 2 sentences (what the AI can extract and quote)
  • Schema markup (FAQ, Article, HowTo) so the AI can parse the page structure
  • Freshness, so the AI prefers your page over a 2021 blog post with the same information
  • Domain trust and topical depth, so the AI sees you as a credible source on this category (searchengineland.com)

Classic SEO signals (backlinks, keyword density) still matter a little but they are not the lead anymore.

AEO vs generative engine optimization (GEO)

Some writers use GEO (generative engine optimization) instead of AEO. Same concept, different branding. GEO leans more on the "generative AI" framing, AEO leans more on the "answer engine" framing.

If you hear both, do not worry about the distinction. They describe the same work.

What AEO is not

It is not paying for placement inside AI answers. There is no paid-inclusion product from OpenAI or Anthropic for their answer engines today. You cannot buy a spot the way you can with Google Ads.

It is not scraping your competitors and rewriting their content. AI engines detect thin rewrites and downweight them.

It is not a one-time project. AI answers are rebuilt on every query, so your pages need to be freshly competitive every month, not freshly competitive once.

Why you should care

You own a business. Buyers are asking questions about your category. Those questions used to go to Google where your site had a shot at page one. They increasingly go to ChatGPT and Perplexity where 2 or 3 sources get named and everyone else is invisible.

If you never get named, your top-of-funnel shrinks, quietly, every quarter. AEO is how you stay in the 2-or-3-source shortlist the AI engines build (thinkwithgoogle.com).

The first move

If the category is new to you, do one thing before anything else: ask ChatGPT the 10 questions your best buyers actually ask. See which businesses it names. If you are not one of them, you have your target list. If you are one of them, check whether the quote is flattering and current. Either way, 30 minutes of manual testing tells you exactly where you stand.
