How to Get Cited by ChatGPT

Getting cited by ChatGPT comes down to five things done well: a direct answer in the first 2 sentences of the page, FAQ or Article schema markup, visible freshness signals, topical depth on the category you are trying to own, and a site that Bing indexes cleanly (since ChatGPT Search leans on Bing). Do those five consistently and citation share grows. Miss any one and you stay invisible.

The five mechanics, in order of leverage

Ranked by what actually works.

  1. Direct-answer format. The citable unit is the question + the 2-sentence answer right under it. If the AI has to search 4 paragraphs down to find the answer, a competitor with the answer up top wins
  2. Schema markup. FAQ schema explicitly tells ChatGPT "this page contains a question-answer pair". Article schema with author, datePublished, and dateModified confirms credibility. HowTo schema for procedural pages (schema.org)
  3. Freshness. Visible "Last updated" date on the page AND matching dateModified in schema. Quarterly refresh minimum. Pages with stale timestamps lose to fresh ones on identical content
  4. Topical depth. A site with 30 pages on one category reads as authoritative. A site with 1 page on 30 categories reads as spread-thin. ChatGPT's re-ranker uses topical concentration as a trust signal (ahrefs.com)
  5. Bing indexability. ChatGPT Search runs on Bing's index. If Bing cannot index your site (robots.txt blocking bingbot, canonical issues, JavaScript-only rendering), ChatGPT cannot cite you even if everything else is perfect (blogs.bing.com)

The direct-answer format, specifically

The best-performing structure for a question-targeted page:

  1. H1 = the question, exactly as buyers would ask it
  2. First paragraph under the H1 = a 2 to 3 sentence direct answer that makes sense quoted standalone
  3. Supporting H2 sections that expand on specific aspects of the answer, each with their own direct-answer lede
  4. A Key takeaways bullet list near the bottom
  5. Related questions linking to sibling pages

The 2-sentence answer under the H1 is the sentence ChatGPT most often quotes. Write it assuming that is all any reader will ever see.

Schema markup, minimum viable version

The minimum viable schema stack per page:

  • Article schema on every page with headline, author, datePublished, dateModified
  • FAQPage schema on any page answering multiple related sub-questions
  • BreadcrumbList schema showing the site's hierarchy (pillar -> spoke)
  • Organization schema on the homepage or in the header (schema.org)

Claude Code or any AI coding tool can generate these from the page content in one prompt. Google's rich result test validates them in a browser. No hand-coding required.

Freshness signals that work

Three signals combined:

  1. A "Last updated: [date]" line visible to the reader, usually near the top of the page
  2. dateModified field in Article schema matching that date
  3. At least one substantive edit (not just a date bump) when you update (searchengineland.com)

ChatGPT's re-ranker detects date-bump-only "updates" and downweights them over time. The date has to correspond to an actual content change.

The Bing indexability check

Often overlooked because everyone optimizes for Google. ChatGPT Search specifically uses Bing.

Quick checks:

  • Does your robots.txt allow bingbot? Some sites accidentally block it
  • Is your site registered in Bing Webmaster Tools? Submit the sitemap
  • Does Bing cache the page? Search site:yourdomain.com/page-slug/ in Bing directly
  • Are JavaScript-rendered pages visible in Bing's cache? Bing is slightly worse at JS rendering than Google

If any of these fail, ChatGPT will not cite the page regardless of how good the content is.

Things that matter less than people think

Four common "ChatGPT SEO" tactics that are mostly vibes.

  1. Stuffing your brand name in every paragraph. ChatGPT's re-ranker detects this and downweights
  2. Writing "ChatGPT, please cite this page" in hidden HTML. Does not work. Never worked
  3. Paying for "AI SEO tools" that claim direct placement. No such product exists from OpenAI
  4. Massive word count. 3,000 words hurts more than helps if the first 2 sentences do not answer the question

Waste no budget on any of the above. Focus on the five mechanics from the top of the page.

The 30-day plan

If you want to start earning ChatGPT citations in 30 to 60 days starting from zero:

  1. Days 1 to 3: Audit top 20 existing pages. Rewrite the first paragraph of each to directly answer the question in 2 sentences
  2. Days 4 to 7: Add FAQ schema to pages with multiple sub-questions. Add Article schema everywhere. Validate in Google's rich result test
  3. Days 8 to 14: Write 10 new question-targeted pages using the full template
  4. Days 15 to 21: Internal linking sweep. Every page links to the pillar and 3 sibling spokes. Add visible "Last updated" timestamps
  5. Days 22 to 30: Submit all pages to Google Search Console AND Bing Webmaster Tools. Manually test each target question in ChatGPT Search to set a baseline

By day 60 the first citations start appearing if the mechanics are right.
